How to Remove GPS Location and EXIF Data From Photos Before Sharing
November 2, 2026 · By Prakhar Gupta
Every photo from a phone or camera carries a hidden block of information called EXIF data. Beyond the picture, it can record exactly where you were standing. This guide shows what is inside and how to remove it before you send a photo to someone.
What EXIF data usually contains
- GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken, often accurate to a few metres.
- Date and time the photo was taken.
- Device details, such as the phone or camera model and the software version.
- Camera settings like exposure, ISO and lens.
- Editing software that touched the file.
Why it matters
A photo of your home, your child's school or your workplace can reveal an address if it is shared as an original file by email, a messaging app that sends files, or a website that does not clean uploads. Many large social networks remove location data from the copy they show publicly, but you should not rely on that. Cleaning the file yourself means the question never comes up.
Remove it in under a minute
- Open the AI Label Remover. It works with photos as well as AI images.
- Drop one or many photos (up to 30 at a time).
- The result lists what was removed, for example "EXIF" or "GPS location".
- Download the cleaned photos, or the whole batch as a ZIP.
Everything happens in your browser. The photo is never uploaded, so the location data never leaves your device while you remove it.
Stop it being recorded in the first place
You can also switch off location tagging in your phone's camera settings. On an iPhone, this is under Settings, Privacy, Location Services, Camera. Most Android camera apps have a "location tags" or "save location" switch in their own settings. Photos taken afterwards will not contain coordinates, although other EXIF details still exist.
Check the result
If you want to double-check, drop the cleaned file back into the tool. A clean file reports that no removable metadata was found. You can also read more about why platforms read this data in our Instagram guide.
