Remuxing vs Re-Encoding: Why Cleaning a Video Does Not Reduce Its Quality

November 2, 2026 · By Prakhar Gupta

Most video tools make files smaller or change their format by re-encoding, which always costs some quality. Cleaning metadata does not need that. It uses remuxing, and the difference is worth understanding.

A video file is a box with streams inside

An MP4, MOV or WebM file is a container. Inside are separate streams: one for the picture, one or more for sound, and sometimes subtitles. Around them sit tags, such as title, creation time, encoder name, location and chapters.

Re-encoding: unpack, change, repack

Re-encoding decodes the picture into raw frames and compresses it again. Every pass loses a little detail, takes a long time and may change file size or colours.

Remuxing: move the streams into a new box

Remuxing leaves the compressed picture and sound exactly as they are and just places them into a fresh container without the old tags. This is called stream copy. Because the data is not decoded, there is no quality loss, and it is quick even for large files.

What the cleaner does to your video

  1. It reads your video inside the browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly.
  2. It keeps the main video stream and the audio streams.
  3. It writes them to a new MP4, MOV or WebM and leaves out the global tags and chapters.
  4. It gives you the new file to download. Nothing is uploaded.

What gets left out

  • Title, comments, encoder and device tags, including location.
  • Chapters and attached thumbnails.
  • Extra data streams, and subtitle tracks.

Limits to know

A few codecs cannot be copied into every container. The tool uses MOV as a fallback for formats such as ProRes or uncompressed audio. If a file is damaged or cut off, the tool says so, because the clean copy cannot restore missing data. Tags that live inside the compressed picture itself, such as an invisible watermark, are not metadata and stay.
