JPG vs PNG vs WebP vs AVIF vs BMP: Which Format Should You Save As?
November 2, 2026 · By Prakhar Gupta
The AI Label Remover lets you save a cleaned image as JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or BMP. Which one should you pick? Here is the short guide.
Keep the original format when you can
For JPG, PNG and WebP, the best choice is usually the format you started with. These are cleaned without recompression, so quality is identical to the original. Changing format makes the tool redraw the picture, which can add a little quality loss for lossy formats.
The five formats
- JPG: small files, works everywhere, no transparency. Best for photos. Transparent areas turn white when you save a PNG as JPG.
- PNG: lossless and supports transparency. Larger files. Best for logos, screenshots and artwork with sharp edges.
- WebP: modern format with small files, transparency and both lossy and lossless modes. Works in all current browsers.
- AVIF: often the smallest file at similar quality and keeps transparency. Encoding can be slow for very large pictures, and some older apps cannot open it.
- BMP: uncompressed and very large. Useful only for old software that asks for it. Transparency becomes white.
Quick picks
- Posting a photo to social media: JPG.
- A logo or graphic with a see-through background: PNG or WebP.
- A website where speed matters: WebP or AVIF.
- Sending to someone with older software: JPG or PNG.
Videos
Videos are never converted. They stay MP4, MOV or WebM, and the picture and sound are copied without re-encoding. That keeps their quality exactly as it was. See remuxing explained for how that works.
Large AVIF files
Very large pictures can take a while to encode as AVIF, and extremely large ones may be refused with a message asking you to choose another format. JPG, WebP and PNG have no such problem.
