How to Remove Metadata From iPhone Photos and Videos
November 2, 2026 · By Prakhar Gupta
iPhone photos and videos store location, time and device information by default. Here are two ways to share them without that data, and when each one is enough.
Method 1: The Share sheet options
In recent versions of iOS, you can choose what to include when you share from the Photos app:
- Open the photo or video and tap the Share button.
- Tap Options at the top of the share sheet.
- Turn Location off, or choose the setting that removes all photo data if your version offers it.
- Send the photo as usual.
This is quick, but menus change between iOS versions, and not every sharing route honours the choice. It also does nothing for files you saved a long time ago or received from other people.
Method 2: Clean the file itself
If you want a copy you can send anywhere, clean the file:
- Open the AI Label Remover in Safari on your iPhone.
- Choose your photos or videos from the Photos library or Files.
- Wait for the result and download the cleaned copy.
Photos in JPG, PNG and WebP are cleaned without recompression. Videos in MP4 and MOV are re-wrapped without re-encoding, so picture and sound stay exactly as they were. Everything runs inside the browser and nothing is uploaded.
A note about HEIC photos
iPhones often save photos as HEIC. The browser decides what it can open. Where it can, the tool converts the picture and saves it as a standard format, with all metadata left behind. If your browser cannot read a particular HEIC file, export it as JPG from the Photos app first.
Stop recording location
For a lasting fix, go to Settings, Privacy, Location Services, Camera and choose Never. New photos and videos will then have no GPS data. See also how to remove GPS location from photos for the full picture.
